Description
Triphala is an Ayurvedic herbal mixture consisting of the fruits of three plants: Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki. This combination has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.
The term “Triphala” comes from Sanskrit. “Tri” means “three” and “phala” means “fruits”. Therefore, Triphala literally means “the three fruits”. This name reflects the composition of the product and emphasizes the harmonious combination of the three ingredients.
Why is Triphala an antioxidant?
Triphala is an antioxidant due to the bioactive compounds it contains, especially the tannins found in the fruits Phyllanthus emblica (Amla), Terminalia bellerica (Bibhitaki) and Terminalia chebula (Haritaki).
The three fruits that make up Triphala contain a variety of compounds:
Amla, for example, contains vitamin C, tannins and flavonoids.
Haritaki contains, among other things, tannins, anthraquinones and chebulic acid.
Bibhitaki contains active ingredients such as tannins, flavonoids and ellagic acid.
